Today is the official kick-off day for this year's EIP problem and we started off with a fabulous boat tour with the boat Ruby. The view around the bay is spectacular except it is quite windy out there. We learnt a lot about the development of the wharfs and shorelines around our site.
Then we head off to the alumni brunch at EDAW's San Francisco office and we were welcomed warmly by the staffs and alumni of the office. We then had a tour of the office and there are a lot niffy and cool models and renderings which I like a lot around the office. We also learnt about how did the EIP project get started 25 years ago. And guess what? We all got a limited edition 25th anniversary mug from the office~
Next, we went to check out our studio space which is right next to our site at Pier 70. We had a couple guest lectures which were very informative and a fun mural production session which reflects our first impression of the site.
This is quite a day (but yet really fun) and when we get back to the Elements Hostel, I am completely exhausted and head right to the bed for another long day ahead.

Today was an interesting overview of the site, the various stakeholders and interested parties and the numerous constraints and desires for the site. It became apparent from the various presentations that everyone has an agenda - a particular element they would like to see implemented or an approach we should take for the site. It made me realise that it was going to be a difficult task balancing all of these views and opinions whilst offering new and inspiring solutions.
A trip around the residential site revealed the diverse character of the local area and the many community people we have so far met reinforced the sense of ownership and emotional attachment the locals have with Pier 70.
In the evening we were kindly treated to a sushi dinner courtesy of the infamous Moshi Moshi restaurant. The food was great and the local people made us feel truly welcome, performing live music and poetry for us. What has taken me by surprise is the faith and expectation people have for us students and it made me feel humble knowing that they beleived we could offer them a unique solution that would resolve their dreams for pier 70.

We started the day by reworking on our murals and looks like everyone is having fun on adding another layer to our work in progress murals.
For the morning, we heard a couple of guest presentations from the San Francisco Port and that's quite of lot of information for us to "digest"...
Following the presentation we went on to a bus tour with stops at the Mission Bay Marketing Office, Pier 40, Crissy Field, and Potrero Hill House. I am totally fascinated by the clear blue skys of San Francisco and therefore I take the opportunity to sketch as much as I could during the tours. My favorite spot is actually Crissy Field because I have seen a lot of the project's plans or photographic documents, but not actually experience the park. Now finally I have the chance to experience one of Hargreave's landscape and I think it's a great landscape with the skyline of downtown San Francisco. I just fell in love with the amphitheater and its background views. The only thing that didn't work well with this nice and sunny day is the wind. It's just so windy!
We ended today's informative session with a local tour of the Dogpatch neighborhood. And yes, I think the name is quite funny! And our final destination is at a local sushi bar called Moshi Moshi and we had a great time there with a lot of poetry, singing, sushi, yakitori, and sake!

Today we finally got to the site! The buildings are incredible. I’m going to be the architect’s voice and upload a bunch of photos. We’re being heralded away to meet, so more on this later…

Today is supposed to be a very intensive day with loads of informative walking tours. But it's such a pretty and sunny day out there so it's a perfect day for us to walk around the area. We did spot out a couple of cool abandoned buildling on our site, and I bet it's going to be a huge debate within the interns to determine which of the buildings we should preserve.
I am particularly amazed by the grotesque or rustic quality of these abandoned unreinforced masonary buildings. In an architect's point of view, the interior of these warehouses can be pretty cool because it has tall ceiling heights and amazingly large windows. (Though it may cost a lot for such preservation efforts...)
I am also amazed at the big cranes at the Dry Dock.

So far this internship has been similar to my past studio experiences, except that we have more structured guidance and more community involvement.
Today we finally started to come up with maximum scenarios: economic, maritime uses, historic preservation, and environment. Each group came up with different scenarios, and each with its strengths and weaknesses. One common thread were the drydocks, which we all kept, and for valid reasons. Although our critic Von challeneged us to consider scenarios where the dock is removed or relocated, I think that we all thought about the economic realities of preserving the drydocks.
We were suppose to end early today, but we barely did. We did, however, discover that Bus 22 goes to Mission St. much faster than the 48, and its cleaner and less hilly and doesn't make me bus-sick.

Had our first creative review today. Expected there to be just a few Edaw staff but there was easily 30 or 40 people cranning to see our first stab at the design. Needless to say, we had lots of feedback and plenty to think about on Monday. In the evening we went to a cool downtown nightclub and it was the first time I had really felt that I had experienced the 'real' san francisco - the people, culture and ambience that goes with the city. It was also an opportunity to let our hair down and reconvene our thoughts before the long hard slog of next week.

Ira Maybaum emailed me back today, and it makes me happy cause usually nobody responds to my emails. But then of course I've never worked on a real project before. He gave us information about the dry dock company and its competitors. When he spoke of dry docks in developing countries like China, he talked about how they were heavily subsidized by their government and how they don't have health and safety concerns for their workers, who they pay nearly nothing for labor. However, I think that the reality is that if their drydocks are cheaper, that's where the business is going. I'll have to read up more on it.
People got lost on the Bus today, and we're waiting for the rest of the crew to come. Don't you just love the spontaneity and danger of public transit?!
I've decided to go on a diet. The the

Club night... woa... that's crazy... intern dances hot here!
We started today a little later than the last couple of days. Apparently the guy at the cafeteria at Elements Hostel hated me and didnt allow me to take their muffins... so in the end I went to the chinese fast food place right across the street from the bus stop and got 2 pot stickers as my breakfast. They were a bit salty, but nevertheless they are so much better than the muffins at the hostel. I am going to have breakfast here from now on...
When I think everything is going to be fine that day but then the bus stopped half way. So we got off the bus and then started walking back to the studio. That was quite a bit for morning exercise because we have to go up and down the hills before we reach studio. By the time we get back, we were all sweaty and hungy again. Joey, our nanny, was so worried about us because we never give him a call and we were all ridiculously late.
And then it's time for some serious work. We have a short review session of the 4 major topic groups from last night and then after lunch we divided up the 21 interns into 2 groups, with each group coming up with a scheme in 2.5 hours which is to be presented at the EDAW pot luck dinner tonight.
I had some fun creating crazy montages for our group and Yan just draws like an angel.
Food at the potluck dinner is very good indeed and I love the dessert (mango pudding and chocolate cake were great!) I was amazed by how well the EDAW staff can cook!
After the intense presentation, we went back to the Hostel and change into our party gear. We are supposed to be in a guest's list in one of clubs near by civic center (according to Jeff.... umm...) but we ran into some problems. In the end we managed to get in and we have some fun with the buzz and dance inside. Yvonne, Steve, Bart and Vipin danced hot! And yea, I took a whole bunch of party pics too! We couldn't have more fun that night because tomorrow is supposingly to be another long day for us!

Had my first go on a kayak today and made it home and dry! The tour around the bay was beautiful and getting up close and personal with the cruise ships and dry docks gave you a whole new perspective on scale! It also helped to emphasis the importance of a water trail and the potential recreation experieince available around the San Francisco shoreline.
In the evening I experienced my first taste of American culture - a SF Giants baseball game at the fabulous SBC stadium with possibly the best views of the bay. I can't say I fully understood the game and we lost to Cleveland but I got to try the infamous garlic fries washed down with a beer and it was the first time I could say I felt truly american!

Guess what, I have seen the biggest cockcroach ever that crawl across my toes in a restaurant in Chinatown, eeeeeeeeelllll!!!
The sea lions at Pier 39 are so cute, and what I learnt from them, "oink, oink, oink...." which is the sound they make... how cute!
We started out the day early because we have a kayak tour early in the morning. We started the tour at pier 40 and made our way down to pier 70. We paired up ourselves so 2 people share a kayak. Ka Ki became my partner and it has been very tolerant of him because I am so not a Kayaker. And there is another story about Ka Ki and the sun block too... Anyhow, it is pretty amazing the approach the site from the water and the megastructural dry dock and cranes.
As for lunch, we picked up our lunch at Pier 40 and walked down to the Ferry Building and had our lunch right next to the flea market. Then we divided ourselves up into 3 groups which one is staying at the Ferry Building, one visiting the Poetreo Hill community, whilethe last group visiting the Chinatown YWCA community. I picked the last group and in fact for all of those going to the last group are in fact East Asians. The architecture of the YWCA is very interesting and of hight historical value. There is an ongoing exhibit which mainly focuses on the early Chinese settlers in North America and particularly in San Francisco. There are a couple of well know American born Chinese that were part of the show as well.
After the tour, we sort of split up and do out own thing where me, May, Dora, and Yan wander around Chinatown for a bit (and yes, we met the big fat cockcroach) and then headed down to Pier 39 and did what tourists usually do. And yes, a lot of oink oink oink too. Then we went to Fisherman's Wharf and had some fun with the penny machine. And I did made quite a few of those.
We then finally went to the SBC park for a baseball game, and it's the San Francisco Giants versus the Cleveland Indians. It was my first timing watching a game and Ihave to pay a lot of attention in order to notice what's going on. And I am still learning. But sadly the Giants didn't do well and we lost in the end.
A bunch of enthusiastic interns went out for bar to have more fun but for me I was so tired and knowing it's going to be another long day ahead, I just went back to my room for some more beauty rest, lol~

The bike tour around the waterfront was amazing, it was very liberating passing the reams of traffic whilst enjoying the vibrant atmosphere of the waterside and the sights and sounds of busy port area. Our attempt at 'critical massing' was a little hairy at time, twenty five of us taking up a two lane freeway (!) however it make me think again about the importance of the bike trail and the opportunity to extend and enhance this experience in the pier 70 site.

This weekend we were able to step back from the project and start the second week refreshed and with creative ideas! After Friday's review with people from the EDAW office, we've taken in the comments and are ready to continue working on our vision plan. We had perfect weather this weekend! Which was great because we had a scheduled kayak tour on Saturday. What a unique opportunity to be able to kayak in the San Francisco Bay! It was very valuable to experience the project site from the water. It gave me completely different perspective on water access, views and even the site's unique waterfront identity.

Today, it's our bike day. I started my day with a super spicy taco from a Mexican place near by the hostel. All of us get a bike except for Tonia and Ka Ki who will be riding very cute tricycles. In fact, Ka Ki became our baggage guy in the end because he has an extra basket to hold our bags.
We rode along the Embarcadero and stop occasionally when Victor tells us more about the place, like at Pier 39 and at the Dolphin's Club. There was a marathon going on so the traffic was crazy... I really think the house around the Palace of Fine Arts are so pretty (and I know they cost a fortune too!) and someday I wish I can afford a house in the area too. The toughest time is when I go uphill but then we enjoy spectacular views of the Golden Gate Bridge and Crissy Field.
And some students went back to the Pier 70 site with the bikes while some gave up because it was too tiring for some of us. So I ended up going to Japantown and SFMOMA.
Apparently, the SFMOMA building is pretty cool (architecturally) and I really like the painted rainforest room, maybe I should think about for my future house?
And someone who is trying to keep a secret about his age, but today it's revealed at the cingular store when the sales associated needed his DOB... lol, no more secrets here~
And food in Japantown is amazingly good. I hope I have more time to shop around. Green tea tapioca is superb too!
I really enjoyed the weekend by visiting various parts of the site... and of course, I have never done that much physical exercise in the entire year, lol!
However travelling with muni is so hard because Ka Ki and I ended up waiting for the number 15 bus back to studio for about 40 minutes... and that's ridiculous. The day ended with an optional production time at studio for the night, but honestly, a lot of interns were so exhausted with the week (yah, a lot fell asleep) so we decided not to work that late at night. Tonight we tried taking the number 22 bus and hoping it will be faster but in fact it took us a longer time to walk back to the Hostel and the way back wasn't that safe, and quoting what Katie said, "it's a dodgy neighborhood."

Today was the first day of intense design work, it was a long design process that saw us battling hard with the site constraints whilst trying to offer visonary solutions to the key issues of built form, open space, land use and economics. By the evening we had some outline proposals but still no consensus my the group on the end solution. Hopefully the experts can offer us some guidance in the morning...

| Olivia Saw Monday, June 13
Based on the fact that everyone had so much fun over the weekends and everyone is so exhausted from the fun, so we decided to meet early today, however, not a lot of us showed up early...
And the muni bus driver didn't recognize mt "City Pass" and he told me, "I have never seen it before..."
The emphasis for today is production and we have divided ourselves up into 4 mian groups, open space, building, economics, and circulation. For me, I enjoyed the time by listening to the on going discussions within the 4 groups and tried to sketch out scenarios for those. We ended the day with a Public Hearing where Alma presented our progress to the public. We also had a cool google/keyhole workshop and seen what kind of amazing animation the program can handle. The last event of day is an intern only session and finally will can call the day off.
For food, we have spring loaf again... vegetarian for lunch and cold sandwich (my least favorite) for dinner.

Today was the day when the plan had to come together and this morning I was not convinced we would ever make it by Friday. There was a lot of debate about the plan and everyone mucked in to try and compile a masterplan we were all satisfied with. As with all group work there were disagreement and moments when frustration took hold and you had to leave and let others take over but the principals and other EDAW staff were really excellent at making us actually put pen to paper and commit to a design. By the afternoon things were starting to come together and into the evening progress was made. I just hope we can get it all done for Friday......

Elements Hostel has the the world's worst muffin ever!
And oh no, Young Min's wallet was stolen from he room last night when he was still sleeping in his room... that sucks and we all learnt our lesson by locking up otu doors and windows 24/7...
We started the day by catching some main themes in our respective groups and laying out some quick overlays for a pin up in late morning. I had fun trying to figure out the building footprints with Yan. Afterall, I was trained as an architect!
After the pin up. we further divide ourselves up into specific tasks in terms of the final production. I have been allocated into the section team along with Brooke and Patricia, and we start out drafting long sections of our site with CAD and then further illustrate it in Photoshop. I had fun googling images and looking through the intern's photo on the P drive server for images to collage into my section.
Apparently the monitor screen is getting irritating my eyes and luckily I havebrought my glasses. It seems like for the next couple of days I have to live without my contact lens on!
For the food business, we had some cold cut sandwiches for lunch and for dinner it's better, we have warm teriyaki chicken with white rice and a rather strange pan of blueberry smootie... the appearance of this wasn't that appealing... Oh well... get the food and then go back to work~

Probably the longest, hardest day of the program, slogging away at the production, trying to get everything done before the dry run presentation tomorrow. Everyone here is working real hard and pulling together to get it all done. In the throws of manic work today I took the time to compose a poem about the vision which is something I have never done before (even though I did do an English degree!!). It read surprisingly well and it gave me time to reflect on the project and how much we had acheived.
In the evening, we had a surprise outing to the Fog City Dinner, which was a welcome relief from the computer. The food and wine was excellent and we made some surprise revelations round the table. I won't mention any names but a lot of the people here are a lot older than they look...maybe there's something in the water in the US!!!!

As we are all in the production mode to produce more graphical work for our presentation, everyone is doing their best in terms of producing a kickass final product. For the entire day I kept working on my section.
For lunch, we have some rally funky (soggy) enchiladas (and I suspect the fish isn't fully cooked) and for dinner, Todd surprises us by arranging a fabulous dinner at Fog City. The Chardonnay was pretty good and it doesnt have that much of a sour taste as most of the white wines do. However sadly after the dinner we have to head back to studio for more production work inorder to get prepared for the dry run tomorrow. I finished up my section and managed to create another sketch perspective to add on to our collection. With the materials we have produced for the vision plan, I bet it will definitely help the people without the design background to understand our plan.
A lot of us work till very late tonight in order to put in more into the dry run. It's sure going to be the best EDAW SSP program ever!

Today was crunch day! We were working hard all day on the final presentation, running and re-running through the presentation to achieve perfection. Bob Pell and Barbara Faga gave us excellent feedback and I am starting to feel that it is all coming together at last. After final tweaks late Thursday night I think we may be ready to reveal the vision...I just hope they like it!

As per request, we have to be gathering at the lobby of the hostel by 7am this morning... half awake we gathered ourselves and transported our half awake souls to the studio. Today is a long day of dry run presentations where we presented our parts in turns and then we each get crit individually on everything, such the voice, tones and pauses, as well as the contents.
We have 3 major dry runs today and it seems like people are pretty satisfied with what we have so far, but yet, we still have to polish our power point a little. And I have never seen a power point with that big of a file size ever too!
Lunch and dinner were both catered by Spring Loaf again and lunch was typical sandwiches, but with some great edaname. Dinner was sort of special because we have some sort of Indian food. I like their mango lassi a lot and I have 2 cups in a row.
We didn't stay that late tonight because we need to have some quality rest for the big day presentation tomorrow. After a final follow up with Alma one by one, we all went home and sleep.

Today was the big day-presentation to the clients, stakeholders and EDAW staff, needless to say we were all feeling a little nervous come curtain call. The presentation went really well and everyone pulled out all the stops to wow the audience with our vision. We were all really surprised to hear that all the feedback was positive and they loved it!
It was a proud moment for us all and it was great to see the hard work of the last two weeks pay off.
After there was the necessary celebrations...food..drink and more drink and it is safe to say that many of the students and many more of the supervisors drank lots, ending with a night of boozy carnage! (I think we all deserved it though!!!!)

Woa, it's our big day and all of our efforts we have made over teh past 2 weeks will be paid off today.
The interns all look so smart and bright today. We took the BART to the Ferry Building. BART is in fact very comfy and I really enjoyed the ride. We have a dry run at the presentation venue before it kicked off at 10pm.
Everyone is so mart looking and we did a great job presenting. The Port of San Francisco and the stakeholders seem to like our vision plan. I am really glad to hear that and see our efforts being paid off.
Following the presentation is the reception where we met a lot of people that took part or is interested with what the EIP participants have been doing. For the remaining of the afternoon, we clean up the studio and a handful of interns went back to the hostel to do some packing because a lot of us will be leaving sunny San Francisco... And then we prepared for the final dinner at Il Fonario. Dinner was really great but on the other hand it's sad that it will be our final dinner. I just don't know when I will be meeting these folks again... so it's a sad goodbye.
We all received our certificates and we are now officially alumnus of the EIP. Yay~
And unforunately Ka Ki lost his offcial EIP bag with some important materials inside sometime during the dinner. I hope he will recover soon.
And after the dinner, a bunch of us head on to more drinks at Laszalo, which is the bar next door to our hostel, but I didn't stayed long though, because I am moving out the hostel tonight....>_<....

The night of boozy carnage was perhaps not the best idea when you have to catch a flight at 10 the next morning! Big thanks to everyone for ensuring I reached my plane on time (particularly Joey who kindly drove me to the airport!!) Regretting that last round of Mojitos and sad to leave the friends I made and the city I fell in love with. Would have loved to have spent more time in San Francisco but the time we were there was made extra special by the local community and there support for us - plus we had some of the best (voluntary) tour guides around!
Overall I would say the project was intense and really hard work at time but an amazing and truly enjoyable experience. What would be extra special is if in 10 years time I return to San Francisco and see our design vision come to fruition. You never know, Crane Point Park may one day become a reality!!

Most interns will leave San Francisco early today while I left the hostel last night. However I have one extra day at San Francisco before I head out to my intern office in Hong Kong. Today is when I became a real tourist and visited the Golden Gate Park, Golden Gate Bridge, Palace of Fine Arts, and Lombard Street. After the tour in downtown San Francisco, I left and on my way back to Daly City, I saw the Dry Dock at Pier 70 and the PG&E power plant smoke stack at a distance. Suddenly all the memory of the past 2 weeks flash back into my mind in a few seconds. Though it has been intensive, I missed the expereince and the friends I have made over the past 2 weeks... sob...
